Server Hard Drive Failure
February 6, 2007 by Brett
Our main file server is still an NT 4 box on a PowerEdge 1400SC, and it’s due to be replaced in a couple of months. The other day I just happened to dive into the event logs. I realized for several weeks I’ve been getting a “PERC 2/DC Controller 0, Array Disk 0:0 reported predictive failure” warning. Not good. Fortunately this is 1 of 3 drives in a RAID array.
The replacement drive came in today - a Seagate 73GB 10,000 rpm SCSI drive. We closed early today because of snow, so I was able to bring down the server. I removed the dying drive and rebooted the server to let it know it only had 2 drives. Then shut down, installed the new drive, rebooted again and it found the new drive (whew!). Then, into the array manager, right-clicked the new drive and rebuilt the drive. Within less than 30 minutes the drive was rebuilt and life was good again. It’s the little victories that make this job fun.
