I’ve talked about Mozy before, but I thought it was time for another mention. Mozy is a remote backup service for your computer that I’ve been using for almost 8 months. They’ve been in beta almost the entire time, but they’ve quietly removed “beta” from their logo and along with that they’ve announced Mozy Unlimited – $4.95/month per computer for unlimited storage capacity.
Mozy sits in your system tray. You tell it what you want to back up when, and then when you go away it securely transports all your files to their servers and stores them there – securely.
Why you need Mozy
Your computer will crash. It’s not a matter of if your hard drive will fail, it’s a matter of when. And if your drive doesn’t fail first, a virus could wipe out Windows, other hardware could fail, or Windows could get corrupted and just stop working. If my computer failed and I didn’t have a reliable backup of my files, I’d lose 6,000 digital pictures, 2,500 mp3s and countless documents.
I’ve backed up to CDs, DVDs and external hard drives in the past. But those all require me to be involved, and we’ve all got better things to do on a Friday night.
Mozy is set it and forget it.
You get 2 GB for free so you can try it out, and less than 5 bucks a month for all you can eat is great.
They’ve also got Mozy Pro with support for Windows Server 2003, which I will be taking a serious look at for our servers at CLC.
